The English wording starts from the Berean Standard Bible, a modern translation from the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek that its publishers gave to the public domain in 2023. Its New Testament is translated from the standard scholarly Greek text, which is itself built mainly on Sinaiticus and Vaticanus. Its Old Testament is translated from the Masoretic Text.
The ETB then applies the rules above. Verses missing from the earliest manuscripts are removed. Wording is changed where the earliest manuscripts read differently. Passages preserved only in the Dead Sea Scrolls are restored. Every change has a note on the page where it happens, and all of them are collected under Explore Textual Changes.
The Old Testament in this edition still starts from the Berean Standard Bible, which is translated from the Masoretic Text. The ETB’s order of priority is the scrolls first, then the Septuagint, then the Masoretic Text, but so far that order has only been applied in the passages that have notes: the Greek Esther, Psalm 151, the Greek ending of Job, the extra passages in Daniel, and Jeremiah, where both forms are given and the Hebrew-only verses are in brackets. These come from Brenton’s English Septuagint (1851), lightly updated in the public-domain LXX2012 edition. Reading the Septuagint everywhere else it differs from the Masoretic Text is the next stage of the work. Most of the scrolls agree with the Masoretic Text word for word where they survive, so most of the Old Testament still reads the same as other Bibles. This is version 0.9. The changes to whole verses are in place and checked, but smaller word-by-word differences inside verses have not all been compared with the manuscripts yet. Corrections are welcome.
The ETB is open source and in the public domain. You may copy, print, share, translate and correct it without asking.
